Wyvern ~ Lords of Winter

Wyvern
Lords of Winter
2011

~

Have you ever taken a bunch of cold or allergy medicine before you went to bed, but before you laid your head to rest, left yourself a note on the kitchen table? Then in the morning, you try desperately to make sense of the note you left for yourself. How about taking an exam and looking at the clock to realize that you have to answer more questions than time allows for? You just start writing stuff down in hopes that at least something you wrote would be correct and you wouldn't turn in an incomplete exam. These are the thoughts that run through my head when I listen to Wyvern's "Lords Of Winter."

Wyvern play power/prog metal and while there are many great elements on the cd, most of the time the songs seem uninspired and incomplete. The composition seems like an afterthought. The production is decent, the cover art is pretty cool, but the songs? Well…

While I don't hate it, the songs on "Lords Of Winter" seem like they didn't receive enough attention. If the band were to listen back through their recordings, pull out the best elements, and make new songs, they could probably come up with 6 or 7 pretty decent tunes. As of right now, I think I am gonna go take some cold medicine and lie down.
